3 Important Tips for Moving and Staying Organized
Moving can be a stressful time. Use these three important tips for moving and staying organized to reduce the chaos as much as possible. From checklists and color coding to developing a clear packing strategy, there are steps you can take to make the move as peaceful as possible.
Checklists
Checklists will be your best friends during your move. First off, create a list with all the utilities in your home and the businesses you can contact to cancel them. Don’t get caught up in the move and forget to turn them off before you leave your home. Next, you’ll want to create a list with your belongings sorted into categories. These categories can include kitchen, living room, bedrooms, bathrooms, closets, etc. A well-developed list will help you keep track of your belongings and how they should be packed.
Color Code
Don’t let your categorized boxes become mixed up among each other. Use a color-coding system so that you know what is in each box as you move. Communicate to movers or those helping you what colors go where. You may want to create a cheat sheet, so to speak, for them to look at. You can use software like Word or Google Drive to type out this cheat sheet, establishing what each color in your coding system stands for. If technology isn’t your thing, consider writing out multiple copies for multiple people.
Packing Strategy
Don’t try to pack without a plan or strategy. You may get too deep into the packing and realize you’ve forgotten something or simply have not packed your belongings in the safest way possible. Plan to pack one room at a time. Go through the room at least once before your move and decide if you need to throw away or donate anything. If your house requires a little more TLC before you go, consider renting a dumpster. Packing-wise, you may want to start with packing belongings you know you’ll need quickly once you are in your new location. This probably looks like packing your bathroom belongings before other items in your home.
Don’t let packing for a move overwhelm you. Use these three important tips for moving and staying organized. Use a checklist, color-coding system, and packing strategy to be as efficient as possible. Don’t loathe your move—just see it as a transition period.
