Drains—inlets that collect surface water—work together with manhole drain grates to prevent clogs from debris like leaves and grass clippings. There are a few features and options for these drain covers, but the most important quality they must have is wide slots for water to pass through.

Another integral part of these systems is the grading or contouring of the ground. This ensures water flows naturally toward drains or retention basins. Meanwhile, trenches lined with erosion-resistant materials provide reinforcement in high-flow areas.

Bunkers, on the other hand, are particularly tricky. Poor drainage here can lead to stagnant water or erosion. Specialized bunker liners or piping systems can prevent these issues.

Additional Ways To Improve Course Drainage

Beyond basic systems, there are several additional strategies to guarantee proper drainage. Aeration, which involves perforating the turf, allows water to penetrate deeper into the ground, promoting quicker runoff. Using sand-based soil mixtures in critical areas can also improve infiltration rates.

Rain gardens or retention basins can also help by serving as natural water collection points, lowering stress on the main drainage systems.

Regular maintenance is equally important. Clearing debris from drains, checking for pipe blockages, and ensuring erosion doesn’t damage the slopes will extend the life of your infrastructure.
