Contrary to what some people think, darts is not a game of luck. There is indeed a skill to playing darts. Below are a few tips on how to get better at darts and play like a pro.

Keep your body still

Allowing your body to move and sway will affect your accuracy. When throwing a dart, your whole body should ideally stay still. Ideally, you shouldn’t even move the shoulder of your throwing arm – all the throwing action should come from below the elbow. If you’re moving your entire arm, you’re likely doing it wrong.

Get the right stance

There is no perfect stance to playing darts, however most pros will play with their best foot forward on the toe line. This foot should remain flat as you throw. Position your body about 45 to 90 degrees away from the board.

Use the same throw

Developing accuracy involves using the exact same hand position and velocity every time you throw. If you vary your hand position or throwing speed each time you throw, your shots will likely be all over the place. Find a style of throwing that feels comfortable and that you can replicate each time to build accuracy.

Play against experienced players

Playing against experienced players in any sport can help challenge you to get better. You’ll be more motivated to take the game seriously than you might be playing casually with friends. You can also learn tips from these experienced players.

Practice at home

Darts is a great sport for practising at home. You can hang up a dartboard on a spare wall and perfect your accuracy. Make sure that the dartboard is at the right height and that you’re positioned the right distance away from the board as you would be in a bar or competitive environment. You can play indoors or outdoors, but consider the fact that you’ll have the sun and wind to contend with when playing outside.

Experiment with different darts

Darts come in a variety of different styles – each with different weights, grips and flights. Some people find it easier to play with certain types of darts. It could be worth looking into what the pros play with. For example, you could try playing with these Peter Wright darts. Be wary that certain darts may not be allowed in certain games.

Play different gamesThere are many different darts game variants beyond standard darts that you can play to build up your skill. This includes Around The Clock, Chase The Dragon, Cricket and Hare And Hounds. Play these games to help challenge you and improve your accuracy at scoring certain numbers.
