Portugal Wins The 2025 UEFA Nations League In Penalty Kick Thriller

Youth vs. Experience: Portugal Edges Spain in a Classic Final

Spain entered the 2025 UEFA Nations League final as heavy favorites over Portugal, boasting one of the most talented young squads in the world, led by Lamine Yamal, Nico Williams, Pedri, and more. On the other side stood a Portugal team still in transition, but with the legendary 40-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo leading the charge. After putting five past France in the semifinals, many expected Spain to wrap this one up early. But Portugal had other plans, proving once again that experience can beat talent on the right night.

Spain struck first with a slick goal from Martín Zubimendi in the 21st minute, but Nuno Mendes answered quickly in the 26th to level it up. Mikel Oyarzabal gave Spain the edge again just after the break in the 45th minute, but CR7, still defying father time, equalized in the 61st.

Cristiano was eventually subbed off with what looked like a groin injury, but Portugal held firm through two periods of extra time and took the match in a dramatic penalty shootout. With the win, Portugal not only secures another trophy for their collection, but also a major bump in global rankings.

Congrats to Portugal, a resilient win for the history books.
