Who Are the Worst Teams in the 2022 College Football Season?

While everyone is jockeying for a position in the College Football Playoff, there are only a handful of teams that have legitimate championship aspirations. The real parity of the game is at the bottom to find out who are the worst teams in the 2022 college football season.

UMass Minutemen

UMass was a program that lost its luster when it left the FCS to play with the big boys of the FBS. Although they aren’t a part of a major conference and can play whomever they desire as an independent; the Minutemen aren’t walking away with many wins.

In 2021, two New England counterparts, Maine and Rhode Island, stomped UMass, proving that some FCS teams can play ball. This season, they welcome back their former head coach, Don Brown, who went 41-19 during his tenure, to double their win total from one to two.

UConn Huskies

It’s been a long fall from grace for the UConn Huskies. In what feels like a fever dream or something you could accomplish in the old NCAA Football video games, UConn played in a major New Year’s Bowl game. For the 2010 season, UConn played the Oklahoma Sooners in the Fiesta Bowl, losing 48-20. Ever since then, the downward spiral keeps rolling along.

UConn’s one triumph last season was against Yale, while they gave the previously mentioned UMass their only win. Former NFL coach Jim Mora Jr. will notice quickly that coaching NCAA Football is different and more difficult than the NFL, with games against Michigan, NC State, and Syracuse before September ends.

Hawaii Rainbow Warriors

Everyone has a soft spot for the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors; there’s something to love about a kickoff happening at midnight. However, the program is going through a transition period after its former head coach, Todd Graham, got the boot for mistreating the players. Additionally, the squad won’t be playing on familiar ground as the renovations in Aloha Stadium continue.

The good news is that their new head coach, Timmy Chang, has a deep connection with the school as one of their legendary quarterbacks. But it’s going to be a while before Hawaii can find its groove again.

Akron Zips

No list discussing the worst college football programs is complete without mentioning the Akron Zips. Akron has been towards the bottom of the barrel since the new millennium. Over the last three seasons, the Zips have a ghastly 3-27 record, with two of those wins over their MAC counterpart Bowling Green. Joe Moorhead is the new head coach with SEC ties, but you’d have to imagine the Zips’ futility will remain the same.

Vanderbilt Commodores

Death, taxes, and Vanderbilt being five-touchdown underdogs when conference games begin are the three guarantees in life. The Commodores haven’t won an SEC game since 2019, and it isn’t looking too promising in 2022, either. Vanderbilt will have road contests against Alabama, Georgia, and Kentucky. They also have home bouts against Tennessee and Florida, so it will get worse before it gets better.

As the same four teams switch spots all season long, it could be more exciting to keep tabs on the worst college football teams in 2022. That UMass-UConn showdown will have as many ramifications as Alabama-Georgia for all the wrong reasons.
