Tell someone where you’re going:

It’s important to let someone know where you’ll be and when you expect to return. This way, someone will know where to look for you if something happens to you. If you’re planning on being in the backcountry for an extended period of time, it’s also a good idea to leave a detailed itinerary with your friend or family member. This should include information such as the route you’ll be taking, campsites, and any potential hazards along the way.

Several apps (such as Gaia GPS) allow users to share their location in real-time with designated contacts. This can be useful if you find yourself in an emergency situation and need to be rescued.

Get in shape:

Hiking and backpacking can be strenuous activities, especially if you’re carrying a heavy load. Therefore, getting your body in shape is essential before embarking on a long hunting trip. This means doing some cardio and strength-training exercises to build up your endurance and strength. Walking or running with a backpack filled with weight is a great way to simulate what you’ll be doing on the trail.

Purchase the right gear:

Having the proper gear is essential for a successful and safe hunting trip. First, you’ll need a good-quality backpack large enough to fit all your supplies. Make sure to try on different types and sizes of packs until you find one that’s comfortable and fits well.

Next, you’ll need a tent or shelter system. If you’re planning on camping in remote areas, it’s best to bring a tent. However, if you’re only going to be spending a night or two in the woods, then an ultralight tarp shelter might suffice. Sleeping bags are another essential piece of gear. Choose one that’s rated for the temperature range you expect to encounter on your trip. It’s always better to err on the side of caution and bring a bag that’s rated for colder temperatures than you think you’ll encounter.

Last but not least, you’ll need a firearm and ammunition. If you don’t already own a gun, it’s best to borrow one from a friend or family member. This way, you can get familiar with the firearm before using it in the field. Purchasing a thigh gun holster is also important to safely and easily carry your weapon while hiking.

Learn how to use your gear:

Before heading out on your trip, it’s important to know how to use all of your gear properly. This includes setting up your tent, starting a fire, and using your firearm safely. If you’re unfamiliar with any of this equipment, there are plenty of instructional videos and articles online that can teach you the basics. It’s also a good idea to practice using your gear in your backyard or some other safe location before taking it into the field.

These are just a few things to keep in mind when preparing for a hunting expedition. By following these tips, you can ensure that your trip is safe and enjoyable.
