Warner Bros. has released the official trailer for Digger, giving fans their first real look at Tom Cruise’s wild transformation into oil tycoon Digger Rockwell. Directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu, the film finds Cruise unrecognizable, potbelly, Southern drawl, and all, as he scrambles to stop a global disaster of his own making.

Tom Cruise Unveils Official ‘Digger’ Trailer

Tom Cruise needs no introduction. The Hollywood icon has delivered some of the biggest blockbuster films of the past four decades, yet an Academy Award has remained elusive. Warner Bros. continues to build excitement for its upcoming slate of films, including Dune: Part Three and Mortal Kombat II.

Today, Warner Bros. released the official trailer for Digger, the upcoming film directed by acclaimed filmmaker Alejandro G. Iñárritu, and it’s easily the most unexpected look yet at a Tom Cruise performance. Back in June, Warner Bros. teased the project with a career-retrospective trailer celebrating Cruise’s legendary run, a nod to the actor’s status as one of the last true movie stars, following in the footsteps of blockbusters like the Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation trailer that helped build his legacy. This new trailer finally reveals the film itself, and it’s a total swing.

Cruise stars as Digger Rockwell, a potbellied, Southern-drawling energy tycoon whose reckless decision-making sets off a looming global disaster, and who’s somehow the one person tasked with fixing it. Described as “a comedy of catastrophic proportions,” the film marks Iñárritu’s first English-language project since The Revenant, shot in VistaVision and scored to a reworked version of Talking Heads’ “Burning Down the House.” Joining Cruise in the star-studded cast are Jesse Plemons, Sandra Hüller, Riz Ahmed, Sophie Wilde, Emma D’Arcy, and John Goodman, who plays a sleepy, easily distracted U.S. president. It’s a bold, strange first look, and it’s already got Hollywood talking. You can watch the trailer above, and Digger arrives in theaters October 2.
